Norris Geyser Basin

I captured this photograph from the boardwalk at the Norris Geyser Basin during my trip to Yellowstone last fall. I was impressed by the dead pine trees in the middle of what was a lush grassy area earlier in the year. I was amazed how the grass has managed to survive while the trees succumbed to the toxic waters of the basin.

Norris Geyser Basin was named after Philetus W. Norris, Yellowstone’s second superintendent. The may be the hottest geyser basin in Yellowstone. Test wells dug in the 1920’s recorded temperatures above 400 degrees at a depth of 265 feet.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 25mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/16, shutter speed at 1/6th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom. I completed processing it in Photoshop with Nik Color Efex Pro.
