I photographed this desolate landscape while walking along the Fountain Paint Pot Nature Trail in Yellowstone National Park earlier this year. I was amazed by the beauty of the amazing geological features, however, this beauty comes at a cost. The toxic chemicals emitted by the geological formations devastate the native grasses, shrubs and trees in the area. I saw a few areal photographs of geysers and hot springs where the vegetation was not present for hundreds of yards around the feature.
The Fountain Paint Pot area in Yellowstone has several springs, pools, geysers, a fumaroles, and the famous Fountain Paint Pot. The trail is an easy 1/2 mile boardwalk loop where you can see all these geothermal features. No two features are exactly alike. They can be grouped into features with a lot of water (hot springs and geysers) and those with limited water (mud pots and fumaroles). I highly recommend a visit to this part of the park.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/13, shutter speed at 1/50th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used a tripod for stability. This is a single image processed in Lightroom then finalized in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex Pro.
