Prickly Pear Flower

I thought I would continue with the desert plant flower theme a couple more days. This Prickly Pear flower was also photographed at the Big Bend National Park last spring. I particularly like the prickly pear plants because they are so easy to spot and they often have over a dozen flowers during the blooming season. I spotted this flower while walking around the area called Tuff Canyon. We were looking for specific cactus flowers to photograph in that area when I decided to take this photo. As was the case with the other two photos I posted over the last two days, this photo was taken without the aid of a flash.

Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most of them live in habitats subject to drought conditions. Many live in extremely dry environments. Almost all of them are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water.  Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north. There is one species (Rhipsalis baccifera) which also grows in Africa and Sri Lanka.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III using my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/11, shutter speed at 1/1000th of a second and the ISO set at 400. I did not use a flash to light the subject. I used Lightroom, Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro to process the image.
