Every full moon is deemed “Howl at the Moon” night by the Austin community. I captured this image during the full moon evening earlier this month. A friend suggested we go to the Zilker Park Clubhouse, a facility that overlooks the Austin skyline, to photograph the full moon. We had the added benefit of the moon reflecting in Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake) that dissects Austin and serves as the point of demarcation between north and south. This vantage point is a great place to photograph the Austin skyline at sunrise or moonrise.
During the “Howl at the Moon” nights, hundreds of Austinites descend on Barton Springs Pool (a tributary to Lady Bird Lake), crane their necks to the sky, and howl at the moon. As Austin’s population has grown, so to has the attendance for what started out as a small, family friendly event. At the last event in June, attendance topped 2,500 individuals. This resulted in a number of safety concerns. The city has now moved to limit attendance to 750 people. The crowds then spill over into the lake. You can see their canoes and kayaks on the photo below.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 104mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/4.5, shutter speed at 1/6th of a second and the ISO set at 1600. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.
