While visiting family in Buffalo, NY, I had the opportunity to visit a farm where people go to pick strawberries. It was there that I found some Barn Swallows. They had built a nest under the roof of one of the carts used as a cashier stand. The mother kept flying in and out in order to bring the little ones food. I stood there for a while trying to capture the three chicks with their mouth open. Things were happening quite fast so I boosted the ISO and the shutter speed in order to capture the moment. I had to select a wide aperture in order to capture the event. I knew I would sacrifice some depth of field as a result.
Barn Swallows are one of the most familiar birds, especially in rural areas and open country. These birds seem to have adopted humans as their neighbors. They typically place their nests in barns, garages, under bridges and other manmade structures.
This image was taken with my Sony Alpha A7R II using my Sony 70-200mm f/4 Lens set on 200 mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/4, shutter speed at 1/1250 and the ISO set at 1600. This is a single image processed in Lightroom.
