Pedernales Falls Sunset

I mentioned recently that I went on a scouting trip with one of my photography friends to Pedernales Falls State Park. I posted a photograph taken during that trip on June 12th titled Pedernales Falls. Since then, I have been watching the weather forecast and I have been keeping my eye out for an evening with great clouds so I could photograph the waterfalls. That day was last Sunday night! I packed up my gear and headed to the Park. As I was driving to the Park I noticed that there was a small thunderstorm that was building in the West. I could tell based on its position that it was going to be a perfect night for photography. Mother nature did not let me down. It was one of the best skies I have seen in quite some time and I was able to capture a few shots with great skies. I sure am glad that I went.

The Pedernales River flows through Pedernales Falls State Park and is a tributary to the Colorado River that feeds Lake Travis and eventually flows through downtown Austin. Recent rains have made the falls a much bigger attraction. I was there a few weeks ago when the weather was rushing through the falls. Before 1970, the Park was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened to the public in 1971. I highly recommend visiting the Park if you are in the area.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f/22, shutter speed at 1/50th of a second and the ISO set at 100. I used 5 bracketed images (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2) and brought them together into one HDR image using Lightroom. I completed the editing process in Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro.

  1. Very nice sky Terry. Great keyhole shot on the clouds. Nice that you remembered to bring your weather remote control so you could get your shot. ;)
