Moonrise

I have mentioned before that when you are out photographing that sometimes the best photograph is actually behind you. That was the case Sunday evening when I went to Pedernales Falls State Park to photograph the sunset. I was so focused on the sunset that I did not pay attention to the moonrise behind me. When I turned around the moon was already part of the way up the sky. I got my camera gear and ran down to one of the many potholes that have been carved out in the limestone. I had to work quickly as the sun was setting fast and I only had a couple of minutes of daylight left.

Pedernales Falls State Park is a geological wonderland. One can’t help but notice the hundreds of potholes that have been carved by repeated flooding. These potholes are formed when rock debris gets caught up in a whirlpool and cut through the limestone like sandpaper. I found this pothole which still had water running into and out of it. It sat higher than the river below so it had a 3D effect. You can see an image of a different pothole that I photographed last year by clicking here.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 Lens set on 16 mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f/11, shutter speed at 13 seconds and the ISO set at 100. This is a single image processed in Lightroom, Photoshop and using Nik Color Efex Pro.
