I was going through the remaining wildlife photos from my recent trip to South Africa when I came across this male Nyala. I posted a photograph of a Nyala last month which I misidentified. It was actually a Kudu. The two species are hard to tell apart. Here are some tips in case you find yourself in a photo safari in the southern region of Africa.
A Nyala ram is shorter and darker than the Kudu. Both animals have a shag and hump, but the Nyala’s hump is smaller and the stripes more pronounced against the darker, longer, coat. The male Nyala’s horns make one tight twist then grow straight up (as in the photo below). The Kudu’s horns make a corkscrew spiral and then adds additional spirals with age.
This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 278mm. The camera was set on Manual mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/500th of a second and the ISO set at 1600. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.
