Nyala

I posted an image a few days ago of Nyalas and Aloe plants taken within the lodge compound I was staying while visiting South Africa. This photograph of a female Nyala was taken in the wild during one of our excursions at the Zulu-Nyala Game Reserve. Nyalas were so plentiful that it reminded me of the large quantities of deer that we have in Texas. Somewhat of a pest. They were in large numbers in part due to the low number of predators on the reserve.

The Nyala is mainly active in the early morning and the late afternoon. It generally browses during the day if temperatures are between 68–86 °F and during the night in the rainy season. As a herbivore, the nyala feeds upon foliage, fruits and grasses, with sufficient fresh water. A shy animal, it prefers water holes rather than open spaces. Nyalas are not territorial.

This image was taken with my Canon EOS 5DS using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 II Lens set on 400mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f/8, shutter speed at 1/250th of a second and the ISO set at 1600. This is a single image processed in Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro.
