Rhythm

The lead guitar player is responsible for the melodic tune and for the general sound that a particular group wants to project. The drummer’s role is to make sure everyone stays in rhythm. As I was photographing this band for my Austin Live Music project, I noticed the drummer’s concentration and I thought it captured well the role of the rhythm-keeper.

The drum is the oldest known instrument in the world dating back to 5000 BC. The instrument is a member of the percussion group and is actually classified as a Membranophone. This is because drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell. There is usually a resonance head on the underside of the drum, typically tuned to a slightly lower pitch than the top drumhead.  Drums have had many uses over time (music, military, communication, etc.). In the modern era, drumming has been an essential part of modern music. Keeping a consistent rhythm for long periods of time is very hard to do… My hats off to drummers around the word!

This image was taken with my Sony A7R II using my Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f/3.2, shutter speed at 1/20th of a second and the ISO set at 3200. I processed this image in Lightroom then used Silver Efex Pro to create the black and white image.
