Volcanic Sunset

Photographing sunrises and sunsets is one of the most difficult tasks in photography. Not only do you have to wait for the right moment but you also have to have a good deal of knowledge and experience to obtain a good outcome.  This is especially true when the sun is above the horizon.  It gets easier (and more rewarding) if you can catch the last rays of light. This was the case when I traveled to Maui earlier this year and captured the image below. I really wanted to find a great sunset spot and I was eager to try out my new Lee Filters. I found a volcanic rock peninsula next to Kapalua Bay so I scouted the site during the day and figured it would be a good spot to do some sunset exposures. I posted a landscape mode image from this photo shoot earlier this year. You can see that post here.

This image was taken with my SONY ILCE-7M2 using my FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS set on 24 mm. The camera was set on Aperture priority mode with the aperture set at f/22, shutter speed at 2.5 seconds and the ISO was set at 50. For this image I also used my Lee Filters which included a circular polarizer and a 3-stop (.9ND) neutral density filter. I processed this single image in Lightroom.
